The use of the pumpkin as a "Jack-O-Lantern" at Halloween is based on an ancient Celtic custom brought to America by Irish immigrants, where on October 31, hollowed-out vegetables with candles inside them were placed on windowsills and porches to ward off evil spirits, one of which was called "Stingy Jack" - a miserable, old drunk who loved playing tricks on anyone and everyone...so they say!
